Homework Policy

In the first grade, homework is very important for reinforcing classroom activities and for instilling responsibility in students. Students will not be given grades for homework, but those who complete their homework on time will receive a sticker on their homework chart and a prize once their chart is full. Those who do not complete assignments regularly will receive a check on their report card for work habits, in which case they will not be eligible for the Honor Roll.

The students will receive a homework packet each Monday, and it will need to be returned on Friday (or the last day of school that week). In this packet you will find activities kids will enjoy doing with YOU. There will be literacy activities, writing activities, and math activities. The expectation is for you to spend ten minutes a night on each of the three subjects. After 30 minutes, please put it away and continue the following day. This should not be completed in one day.

Please make sure your child is completing this work to the best of his or her abilities. It is very important that you do not complete the independent work for them. If your child is struggling with any of the things that we have given, please let us know so we can address those issues. The homework packet is not intended to frustrate you or your child, but rather to reinforce concepts.

The homework packet will sometimes include worksheets, but much of the time the reading and math activities will not be written work. This type of practice is more valuable for first graders than completing worksheets every day. Please sign your initials on the cover page each night so that I know you and your child completed the work.

Thank you for all your support as we work as a team this year to help your child grow!
